I, and a lot of other artists, get asked to do art for free on a weekly basis. They get pretty old fast, especially when you know that the person asking is just trying to get out of paying for something. Then there’s the more innocent people, who ask because they just can’t afford it. Please note, if you can’t afford the art, or aren’t even willing to negotiate a price, don’t ask. I’m sure there’s a lot of artists out there who would love to haggle with you for some sort of payment.
Let’s say you’re trying to get a project done, but, lo and behold, you lack artistic talent. Instead of buying that new game, designer shirt or a dinner at Red Lobster, that’s money you could be spending on some talent to help further your goals.
"But you like drawing anyways right? This is a great opportunity to…" Stop right there. Yes, I and many other artists who draw for money, like to also draw on their off time. But that’s just it. Why should we take the time to further your own dreams, when we could take that same time and apply it to ourselves. There has to be incentive and your wizard-like time traveling knowledge that your project is going to be picked up by Marvel or posted on Steam is not good enough.
"Well now you’re just being greedy." Shush! Did you hear that? That sounded like a fart. Smells like a bad one too. At this point you’re a butt that won’t stop farting. Don’t be a butt. Artists have to buy things too. Sometimes things that require us to live and not do bad things like die.
I realize this has been said over and over and over on the internet, but many people tend to ignore it. Maybe calling them farting butts will make them change their ways. I don’t know.
